Escallonia July, 7 2010
So I was at Walmart looking at the plants there and came across a small area with a bunch of these Escallonia Bushes sitting there... it was in a dark corner at the far end of the nursery and I picked out a couple that I thought looked decent and could possibly down the road have bonsai potential and set them aside and suddenly realized that they were on clearance for *gasp* ... $3.00!! I was thrilled that I could take this beautiful blooming plant home for just 3 dollars. So before I left I had them pack this huge outta control beast up and brought it home :D For such a beautiful plant with such dainty flowers it sure did have a wild side to it ;p
First Prune July 9, 2010
So once I got it home I gave it a couple days so settle in and adjust to its new environment gave it a good watering because it was in pretty bad shape when I first got it, and then gave it its first pruning. I cleaned up this plant really well and made sure not to overdo it. It cleaned up very nicely as you can see and was really starting to take shape. It even had a bunch of blooms popping up and seemed to be pretty happy for the time being.
After The Root Pruning July 13, 2010
After the initial "top pruning" I gave the plant a few more days to revive from that and then decided to take a look at the roots. I took the plant out of the original pot and realized that it was severely root bound. Knowing it was root bound I knew I needed to give it a root pruning. Having just finished pruning my Boxwoods roots the day before I figured it would be pretty simple. Boy was I wrong! This plants roots were so entwined and root bound that I couldn't get in there to see what I was doing. Eventually I just got in there and started cutting and "Hoping" that it wouldn't be to much for the poor plant to handle. Once I was able to get to the base of the plant I noticed that this plant wasn't just "one" plant... It was two!! *gasp* I pondered for a moment whether or not I should separate them and then decided it would most likely be best for the plants if I did separate them. So I did. Now they are two separate plants in two separate pots. I named one bloom and the other grow :) " Bloom n' Grow " Though this was a incredibly traumatic experience for these plants I am hoping they will pull through it. The worst part is over for them, if they can survive that they can survive anything else that I put them through, so we'll see.
